DNA Update

Except for one of my sisters, I now have DNA results for every immediate family member, and a couple of others besides.  On Craig's side three of his siblings have not tested.

I put all results (percentages) in a table for easy viewing and comparison.  Craig is listed twice, once with me to make sense of our children's DNA, and then again with his own parents and siblings. Those in the upper part of the table are my family; his are in the lower.

All DNA tests were done through Ancestry, except for my uncle highlighted in orange (done through 23andMe).  The geographical categories of the two companies differ slightly.  I've used Ancestry's categories and put the percentages from 23andMe in the closest matching column.  I hope that makes sense.

NOTES: Pa Uncle and Pa Aunt are my Dad's siblings.  My nephew's percentages don't add up to 100% because his sharing feature didn't work, so he related to me what he could remember.

Abbreviations are:
Irel=Ireland; Est Eur=Eastern Europe; Grt Brit=Great Britain; Iber=Iberia; Scan=Scandinavia; Fin-Rus=Finland/NW Russia; Cau=Caucasus; Wst Eur=Western Europe; Eur Jew=European Jew; Itly/Grc=Italy Greece; Balk=Balkans/Southern Europe; the 3 Asians are Asia Central, Asia East and Asia South; Mid Est=Middle East; Nat Am=Native American; Afr=Africa; Mel=Melanesia

  1. Interesting! I like how your fifth child's Irish DNA stood out more than the other four children, but his Great Britain DNA was so much less. It's neat seeing how your strong Eastern European DNA shows up in your children, too. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Ancestry has their DNA tests on sale through Monday, I believe. 30% off, in case anyone needs a test. I'm sure you know this already, but in case you missed it . . . :)

I'm guessing Craig's Ancestry DNA test would show a trace or more of Iberian DNA since Dau #1 has 11 and you only have 10.

    1. Susanne, Craig has now done an Ancestry test. Soon as the results come I"ll add them to the table. I'm glad my kids made a strong showing with E. Europe DNA. It's such a distinct heritage.

  3. Wait is daughter 1, B? How crazy is it that I actually have more Great Britian then she does and we are close on the Iberian! I also have 8% eastern europe...which was a little bit of a surprise because my mom only had 4%...still waiting for my dad's test to come through. It is so interesting to see the variation in your kids. This makes me want to test all my kids. So far we've only done E. Between me and my hubby Ezra ended up 64% GB. He also had exactly half of my native american and Iberian peninsula. Jason joked he was exactly 1/4 Mexican, which he totally is :)

  4. Yes Crys, that's B. Interesting that even those of my children who look alike, their DNA has some major differences. My nephew who is half Mexican shows only 20% Native American. Now I'm curious about my grandchildren's DNA.

With improvements in DNA-related technology, I hope we can get more focused results in these tests.

  5. A friend was asking about AncestryDNA tests so I came to look at this again. Recently I looked at my results online, and Ancestry has now changed Italy/Greece to "Europe South" which if you click on it says,

    Europe South
    Primarily located in: Italy, Greece
